Preserving the traditions and culture of the midwest

Welcome to the Pelkie Blog

Thank you for checking out our Pelkie blog. We are making a documentary about this small town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and we need your help. Please feel free to share your stories and especially pictures of Pelkie with us. We want to hear about what life was like throughout Pelkie’s history.

  1. Hi Elaine,
Resending this post as I am a cousin of the one who originally posted. What year was the post office in your store, and your mother the post mistress? My Grandfather was the first Postmaster of Pelkie. Theodore Duquette. He built a house with the post office in it. He died at an early age of 36 from TB. Did this house become the Maki General Store. Do you have an address of the post office that our Great Grandpa would’ve been in?

  3. My name is Elaine Maki Weiland. My Dad owned the Maki General Store in Pelkie. We sold everything from toothpicks to Tractors. Groceries were delivered to customers, with 3 trucks in more rural areas. 2 trucks picked up the milk from farmers and were delivered to the cheese company in South Range.
We enjoyed skating and I particularly enjoyed figure skating. We had a competition for Pelki Queen and I was crowned queen of the ice carnival:)
The post office was in our store and my Mother was post mistress. My father served on the school Board. There were two horse drawn buses (in the winter it was a sleigh) delivering kids to school. I would be glad to share more memories growing up in Pelkie with you.
